Chapter 14 - THE DIGITAL RESURRECTION

Three weeks later.
The afternoon sun streamed through the high windows of the District Attorney’s office in the downtown justice center. The air was warm, smelling of fresh coffee and legal parchment.
Marcus sat in a leather armchair opposite District Attorney Vance—no relation, though the irony was not lost on anyone—and Detective Miller.
On the desk between them sat a high-end laptop, displaying the contents of Sarah’s blue USB drive.
"The forensic team finished decrypting the drive yesterday," District Attorney Vance explained, turning the laptop screen toward Marcus. "It contains full audio logs of Clara blackmailing Sarah, along with digital ledger transfers proving Clara was embezzling funds from the family estate to pay off gambling debts overseas."
Marcus stared at the screen, watching a video file play.
On the monitor, Sarah sat at her desk, looking pale and tired, but her eyes were clear and full of love as she spoke directly to the camera.
"Marcus... if you are watching this, it means I failed to protect myself. Clara has been poisoning my tea with low-dose synthetic toxins to make me appear unstable to the doctors. She wants the trust shares. If anything happens to me, do not trust her with Lily. She is dangerous. I love you both so much. Never forget that."
A single tear rolled down Marcus’s cheek, but the heavy, crushing stone of guilt that had rested on his chest for eighteen months finally dissolved into nothingness.
Sarah hadn't abandoned them. She had fought until her very last breath to leave behind the weapon that would eventually save their daughter's life.

"Clara has been charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, child abuse, and grand larceny," District Attorney Vance stated, closing the laptop screen. "With this video evidence and the physical marks on Lily, she will spend the remainder of her life in a maximum-security prison without the possibility of parole."
Marcus stood up, shaking both men's hands firmly. "Thank you."
