Chapter 2 - THE ANATOMY OF BRUISES

The silence that settled over the kitchen was deafening, broken only by Lily’s ragged breathing and the steady, rhythmic drip of water falling from her dress onto the floor.
Clara stood three feet away near the stainless-steel range hood, smoothing down the front of her wet cream dress with methodical, trembling palms. Her long brown hair clung to her cheeks. She was breathing rapidly, her chest rising and falling beneath the damp fabric, but her face was rapidly reconstructing its usual mask of gentle, fragile innocence.
Marcus kept his body positioned as a physical shield between Clara and the child. His gaze remained locked on his daughter’s pale, trembling face. He ran his hands down her wet arms to check her temperature, but as he gently grasped her left forearm, Lily let out a sharp, involuntary whimper and pulled away.
Marcus stopped instantly. His eyes narrowed with sudden, icy dread. "Lily?"
Gently, ignoring Clara’s sudden step forward, Marcus pinched the rim of Lily’s soaked pink sleeve and slowly pulled the wet cotton up toward her elbow.
Beneath the fabric, exposed under the bright daylight, lay a hideous patchwork of violence. Across Lily’s delicate, pale forearm were thick, deep purple swellings and yellowish-green contusions—finger-shaped marks pressing deep into the soft tissue, along with long, angry red abrasions that looked like they had been inflicted by sharp fingernails or heavy leather straps. Some of the bruises were fresh, pulsing with raw inflammation; others were fading into sickly shades of brown, proving a history of sustained, systemic abuse.
Marcus felt the air leave his lungs entirely. A cold, suffocating sickness surged from his stomach to his throat. He stared at the marks, his vision blurring slightly at the edges as adrenaline flooded his system.
"Who did this?" Marcus asked, his voice dropping into a dangerously low, raspy pitch. He looked up, his eyes locking onto Clara with a lethal intensity. "Who did this to my daughter?"
Clara threw her hands up defensively, stepping backward until her shoulder pressed against the white cabinets. Her eyes widened, pooling with well-rehearsed tears that glistened in the natural light.
"Marcus, please! You don't understand!" Clara cried, her voice squeaking with manufactured terror and desperation. "She fell! She fell down the basement stairs yesterday while you were at the office! I was helping her! I was just trying to clean her up in the bucket because she got motor oil all over her face!"
Marcus stood up slowly, lifting Lily onto the edge of the kitchen island behind him. He took one step toward Clara, his height towering over her, his hands curling into tight fists at his sides.

"She fell?" Marcus repeated, each word laced with pure venom. "You think I'm blind, Clara? These are handprints. Someone grabbed her and squeezed her until her skin bled beneath the surface."
"I would never hurt her!" Clara shrieked, pressing her palm to her chest, her breathing becoming shallow and dramatic. "You know how much I love her! I’ve taken care of her ever since Sarah died! How can you look at me like I'm a monster?!"
