Chapter 10 - THE AMBUSH OF LIGHTS

The police cruisers came to a screeching halt on the wet grass of the front lawn, their tires tearing up long strips of green turf.
Four officers exploded out of the vehicles, guns drawn, taking tactical positions behind their open car doors.
"Marcus Vance! This is the Sheriff's Department!" an officer barked through a megaphone, his voice booming across the yard. "Exit the residence with your hands visible! Do it now!"
From the shelter of the deck lattice, Marcus could see Clara standing near the corner of the garage, wearing a long black coat over her damp dress, a white handkerchief pressed to her eyes as she wept dramatically for the officers.
"He's inside!" Clara sobbed loudly, pointing toward the front entrance. "He has a knife! He's hurt the girl! Please, you have to save her!"
Marcus felt a surge of unadulterated rage that threatened to snap his restraint. He pressed his hand over Lily’s mouth, keeping her silent as they hid in the shadows beneath the deck floorboards.
"Stay quiet, baby," he whispered in her ear. "Daddy’s going to handle this."
He knew that if he stepped out from under the deck right now, disheveled, covered in mud, holding a crying child, the panicked officers—primed by Clara’s emergency call—might draw the wrong conclusion and open fire before he could utter a single word of explanation.
He needed proof. He needed the police to look at the evidence before they looked at him through a gunsight.
Marcus reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone, and checked the screen. He had two bars of cellular signal.
He opened his email application, attached the raw video files he had recorded on his phone during the kitchen confrontation—including the close-up footage of Lily’s bruised arms and Clara’s damning statements—and addressed the email directly to the lead detective investigating Sarah’s open death file, as well as the County Prosecutor’s public intake portal.
His fingers flew across the glass:
SUBJECT: EVIDENCE OF ABUSE AND FALSE REPORT - CLARA VANCE. ATTACHED VIDEO SHOWS ATTEMPTED DROWNING OF LILY VANCE AND CONFESSION TO SURVEILLANCE. I AM OUTSIDE UNDER THE DECK. DO NOT FIRE.
He hit SEND.
