THE BURIED ECHOES OF SILENCE / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6 - THE ARCHITECTURE OF A CAGE

The mechanical whine of heavy steel security shutters descending over the large picture windows resonated through the open-concept house. One by one, the bright streams of natural daylight were severed, replaced by the ominous, overlapping shadows of impending darkness.

The kitchen, once illuminated and modern, swallowed itself in a gloomy, twilight hue.

Marcus rushed to the living room window, pulling back the sheer curtains just as the solid aluminum shutter slammed down into the exterior sill with a heavy, deafening THUD.

The house was sealed.

"Daddy! The light is going away!" Lily squeaked, panic rising in her voice as she hugged his neck tightly.

"It's okay, Lily, Daddy's here!" Marcus shouted over the mechanical noise. He ran back to the smart control panel near the entryway and slammed his thumb against the touchscreen.

The screen was frozen, displaying a stark red error message: OVERRIDE CODE REQUIRED. ADMIN ACCESS DENIED.

"Damn it!" Marcus cursed, striking the wall with his palm.

The intercom crackled to life again. Clara’s laugh bounced off the bare walls, eerie and metallic. "I changed the master admin credentials twenty minutes before you came home, Marcus. I knew you were coming back early. I saw your location tracking on the shared family app."

Marcus stared up at the small white speaker mounted in the ceiling, his breath ragged. "Clara! Open these damn doors! You're insane! If you hold us here, it's kidnapping! It's false imprisonment!"

"It's not imprisonment if I'm protecting my investment," Clara replied smoothly through the speaker. "You think Sarah killed herself because she was sad, Marcus? You really are as oblivious as she said you were."

Marcus felt the floor tilt beneath his feet again. The mention of Sarah’s death—the wound that had never truly healed—was being ripped open, salted, and twisted.

"What did you say?" Marcus asked, his voice shaking with a dangerous mixture of grief and fury.

"Sarah was going to take the company shares and leave the country," Clara’s voice echoed from above, cold and devoid of humanity. "She found out about the offshore transfers I made using her digital signature. She was going to ruin me. Just like you're trying to do now."

Marcus’s hand froze mid-air. "You... you were in this house the night Sarah died."

"I was in the basement," Clara corrected, her tone sickeningly nonchalant. "And if you don't shut up and sit down on that couch, you and your little girl are going to join her."
