Chapter 3 - THE WHISPER IN THE DARK

The mention of Sarah's name acted like a strike of lightning inside the room. Sarah—Marcus’s late wife, who had allegedly taken her own life in the very same house eighteen months ago.

Marcus took another menacing step forward, but before he could speak, a tiny, cold hand reached out from behind him and grabbed the hem of his dark jacket.

Marcus froze. He turned his head slightly, keeping his gaze fixed on Clara out of the corner of his eye. "What is it, Lily?"

Lily leaned forward on the edge of the counter, her face pale as snow, her lips blue from the icy water. She pulled Marcus’s ear down toward her mouth. Her small body trembled so hard that her breath rattled against his ear.

"She's lying, Daddy," Lily whispered. Her voice was so quiet it was almost swallowed by the low hum of the refrigerator. "She did it with the belt. And... she told me not to tell you."

The words hung in the air like a drop of liquid poison.

Marcus felt his blood turn to liquid nitrogen. The world around him seemed to lose all sound. He slowly straightened his back, turning around completely to look at his daughter.

"What did she say to you, Lily?" Marcus asked gently, touching her wet cheek. "Tell Daddy everything."

"She said..." Lily swallowed hard, tears overflowing her eyes and cutting clean trails through the water drying on her cheeks. "She said if I told you about the bruises, she would make me go into the dark room under the garage... where Mommy is."

The kitchen seemed to tilt. The high-contrast warm daylight filtering through the picture window suddenly felt blinding, grotesque, and violently unnatural.

Clara’s defensive demeanor shattered instantly. Her eyes darted wildly toward the basement door situated at the end of the kitchen hallway. Her jaw clenched tight, her lower lip quivering not with fear, but with an overwhelming, psychotic rage that breached her fragile composure.

"She's confused, Marcus!" Clara yelled, taking an aggressive step toward them, her voice dropping its tearful octave and becoming sharp, cold, and commanding. "The child is traumatized from her mother's death! She's making up stories! You know she has an overactive imagination!"

"Then why is she scared of you?!" Marcus shouted back, his voice echoing off the quartz counters and high ceiling like a gunshot. "Look at her, Clara! She is terrified of you!"

"Because you're screaming at me in front of her!" Clara screamed, her eyes widening into glassy, unblinking spheres. "I gave up my career to help you rebuild your life! I moved into this house to raise your broken child! And this is how you repay me? By taking the word of a hysterical seven-year-old over mine?!"
