Chapter 1 - The Plunge

The midday sun beat down upon the sprawling estate with an unyielding, high-contrast glare that bleached the color from the surrounding green hedges. Arthur stood near the polished teak patio doors, holding a glass of iced water. His white tailored shirt was crisp, unbuttoned at the collar, reflecting the opulent quietude of a high-society afternoon. But beneath the surface of this tranquil summer day, a quiet poison had been brewing for months.
Suddenly, the silence was shattered. A mid shot, frozen with heavy motion blur, captured the frantic arc of a child falling backward into the clear blue water of the swimming pool. It was Lily, his six-year-old blonde daughter, clad in her favorite light blue sleeveless dress. Her hands reached wildly for something to grasp, but found only empty air. At the extreme left frame of Arthur's vision, a woman’s bare arm extended toward the falling child—fingers stretched in a motion that lingered horrifyingly between a panicked rescue effort and a calculated push.
The quiet violence of the moment ended as Lily’s body broke the surface with a loud, splashing crash. The displacement of water sent sudden ripples racing toward the concrete edge. For a fraction of a second, the world seemed to stop. The sunlit courtyard, the manicured trees, and the pristine blue basin turned into a stage for a nightmare. Arthur felt his heart drop into a cold abyss. The water churned, swallows of blue fabric rising to the top before sinking again, accompanied by the muffled, frantic struggle of a child gasping for air underwater.
