THE GLASS HOUSE OF ROSES / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - The Sanctuary of Ghosts

The scent of jasmine and damp earth hit Eleanor Sterling long before the cold, oppressive silence of the estate did. At one year old, little Lily knew nothing of deeds, inheritance, or the brutal politics of bloodlines. She only knew the swing. It hung from the central glass dome of the grand glasshouse conservatory, carved from fragrant cedar, its ropes entwined with climbing pink and yellow roses that danced gently whenever the breeze slipped through the open transoms above.

Lily sat upon it, her cream-colored lace dress bunched around her tiny knees, her sparse blonde hair haloed by the warm, diffused afternoon light streaming through the glass panels. She giggled, a sound as pure as crystal, her small feet kicking out into the humid air. Her late mother, Clara, had designed this swing with her own hands just weeks before her sudden, tragic death. Every rose planted along its thick ropes was a living memory, a quiet promise carved into cedar and vine.

Then the shadow fell over her.

It did not creep; it arrived like an executioner entering a sunlit courtyard. Vanessa stood over the swing, her tall, slender frame encased in a body-con, crimson silk gown that looked violently out of place among the natural greens and soft pastels of the greenhouse. Her dark eyes were cold, calculating, devoid of warmth. Behind her stood her own eighteen-month-old son, Julian, dressed impeccably in a tailored grey tweed vest and trousers.

Without a word, Vanessa reached down. Her long, manicured nails pinched deeply into the soft flesh of Lily’s upper arms.

"Up," Vanessa purred, a dark, low whisper meant only for the child’s delicate ears.

With a sharp, cruel yank, Vanessa plucked the screaming toddler off the wooden seat. She didn't lower her gently. With a casual, indifferent flick of her wrist, she dropped Lily onto the hard, cold white tile floor below. Lily landed heavily on her side, her knees scraping against the unyielding stone, her joyful laughter instantly shattered into a shrill, suffocating wail of terror.

"Only my son gets to play here," Vanessa spat, her voice a sharp blade slicing through the quiet humidity of the room. She lifted Julian with practiced, delicate care, setting him onto the rose-draped cedar swing.

Lying on the freezing floor, her tiny body shivering violently as hot tears tracked through the dust on her cheeks, Lily looked up through her blurred vision.

"Mommy... Mommy made this for me," the toddler sobbed, her tiny, chubby hand reaching helplessly toward the climbing vines.

Vanessa leaned down, her crimson lips curving into a grotesque, venomous sneer. Her perfume, heavy with suffocating tuberose, washed over the crying child like a shroud.

"Your mother is dead," Vanessa whispered, her pale blue eyes glittering with cold malice. "This is my house now."
