Chapter 10 - The Rebuilding

Three weeks later.

The morning sun broke brightly over the estate, illuminating the glass greenhouse until it sparkled like a giant diamond perched atop the green hills of the coast.

The dark storm of scandal that had rocked the city’s high society had finally settled. The news of Vanessa Vance’s arrest for the premeditated murder of Clara Vance had dominated the headlines for days, followed by the complete legal forfeiture of Julian Sr.’s rights to the Vance estate.

Inside the conservatory, workers had spent the past week carefully restoring every inch of the structure. The cold stone tiles had been replaced with warm, non-slip cedar decking, and hundreds of fresh white jasmine and golden tea roses had been planted along the walls.

In the center of the dome, hanging securely from reinforced titanium cables disguised as climbing vines, was the original wooden swing.

Evelyn stood beside it, wearing a simple cream linen blouse and trousers, holding a tray of fresh orange slices and warm milk.

Marcus walked into the greenhouse, carrying a stack of legal documents under his arm.

"The final court decrees were signed this morning, Mrs. Vance," Marcus reported with a respectful nod. "You have been granted sole, absolute legal guardianship of Lily. The Vance Trust has been restructured under an independent board until she turns twenty-five."

"And the trial?" Evelyn asked, taking a fresh orange slice and setting it on a small plate.

"Vanessa’s attorneys attempted to enter a mental incompetence plea," Marcus said with a cold smirk. "The judge threw it out within five minutes. The trial date is set for next month, and the prosecution is seeking the maximum penalty without parole."

Evelyn nodded slowly, satisfied. "And Julian?"

"He accepted a plea bargain," Marcus replied. "Ten years for conspiracy and obstruction. He won't be bothering anyone for a very long time."

Evelyn looked out toward the entrance of the greenhouse, where little Lily was running into the room, her small feet tapping happily against the new cedar decking. She wore a bright yellow summer dress, her blonde hair tied up in two neat pigtails, holding a wooden toy duck in her arms.

"Grandma! Swing! Swing!" Lily squealed, her eyes sparkling with pure, unburdened joy.

Evelyn set the tray down and lifted the child gently into her arms, placing her securely onto the cedar seat of the swing.
