Chapter 4 - Shadows Beneath the Glass

An hour later, the sun had begun to sink beneath the horizon, casting long, skeletal shadows across the floor of the greenhouse. The ambient light turned from a warm gold to a bruised, violet blue.

Evelyn sat on a velvet armchair in the quiet reading nook just outside the greenhouse entrance, gently rocking Lily in her arms. The child had finally cried herself to sleep, her tiny thumb tucked into her mouth, her soft breaths warm against Evelyn’s neck.

Standing in the shadow of a tall fiddle-leaf fig tree was Marcus Vance, Evelyn’s long-time head of security and a former military intelligence officer. His sharp, weathered face was illuminated by the soft light of his tablet screen as he reviewed the estate's internal security feeds.

"The locks on the master suite have been changed, Mrs. Vance," Marcus reported in a low, quiet rasp. "Mr. Julian and his wife are currently confined to the west wing guest rooms. My men are stationed outside their doors."

"And the legal injunction?" Evelyn asked, her fingers gently stroking Lily’s soft blonde pigtails.

"Your attorneys filed the emergency protective order thirty minutes ago," Marcus replied. "Given the video evidence from the conservatory ceiling cameras—which clearly captures Mrs. Vanessa dropping young Lily onto the stone tile—the judge signed the temporary restraining order immediately. Vanessa is legally barred from being within five hundred feet of the child."

Evelyn closed her eyes, letting out a long, heavy exhale. But the relief did not come. Instead, a cold, persistent gnawing in her gut grew stronger.

"Marcus," she said softly, opening her eyes to look at the dark glass dome above them. "Clara’s death... six months ago. The police ruled it an accidental fall from the balcony."

Marcus went still, his tablet lowering slightly. "Yes, ma'am. The toxicology report was clear, and the railing was found to be structurally weathered."

"Clara built that balcony," Evelyn whispered, her voice dark and edged with a terrifying realization. "She built it with reinforced steel and teak. She knew every inch of this house. She didn't slip."

Marcus stepped out of the shadows, his eyes narrowing. "Are you implying..."

"Look at what happened today, Marcus," Evelyn said, looking down at the sleeping child in her arms. "Vanessa didn't just want a home; she wanted to erase Clara. She wanted to erase Clara’s child. A woman who can drop a one-year-old onto concrete out of pure spite... is a woman capable of anything."

Evelyn looked up at her security chief, her expression hardening into solid granite.

"Reopen the file on my daughter's death," Evelyn commanded. "Check every camera feed from that night. Check every bank transfer Vanessa made in the three months leading up to the fall. I want to know where she was at 2:00 AM on the night Clara died."

Marcus nodded slowly, a dark understanding passing between them. "Consider it done, Mrs. Vance."
