THE GLASS HOUSE OF ROSES / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5 - The Poisoned Well

Late into the night, the storm that had been brewing over the coast finally broke over the Vance estate. Thunder rumbled in the distance, shaking the iron frame of the glasshouse as heavy rain lashed against the clear panels above.

In the dimly lit guest wing, Vanessa paced the Persian rug like a caged panther. Her crimson dress lay discarded on the bed, replaced by a dark silk robe. Her left cheek was still swollen and discolored from Evelyn’s slap, but it was the humiliation—and the sudden, terrifying loss of control—that burned her from the inside out.

Julian Sr. sat on the edge of the bed, his head buried in his hands.

"We're finished, Vanessa," Julian groaned, his voice muffled. "You don't know my mother. When she locks the vault, nobody opens it. She’s going to disinherit me. She’s going to leave everything to Clara’s kid."

Vanessa stopped pacing. She turned toward her husband, her pale eyes flashing in the dark room like a predator's.

"She can't disinherit you if the child isn't here to receive it," Vanessa whispered softly.

Julian lifted his head, staring at his wife in sheer horror. "What... what are you talking about?"

"Look at yourself, Julian!" Vanessa hissed, gliding across the room and grabbing him by the shoulders, her nails digging into his skin. "You're thirty-four years old, and you're still begging your mother for an allowance! Clara got the estate, Clara got the company, Clara got the glory! And even from the grave, Clara is stealing everything from our son!"

"Clara is dead!" Julian shouted softly, trying to pull away. "Leave it alone!"

"Clara is dead because she was stupid!" Vanessa spat, her face twisting into a terrifying, unhinged grin. "She thought she was untouchable. She thought she could stand on that balcony in the middle of a storm and tell me I didn't belong in this family!"

The room went dead silent, save for the patter of rain against the windowpane.

Julian froze, his breath catching in his throat. He looked up into his wife’s eyes, a cold, sickening horror slowly dawning in his chest.

"Vanessa..." Julian whispered, his voice trembling violently. "What did you say?"

Vanessa realized her slip instantly. Her grin vanished, replaced by a sharp, calculating calm. She smoothed her silk robe and took a slow step back.

"I said Clara was stupid," Vanessa lied smoothly, her tone turning as cold as ice. "And if you don't stand up to your mother tonight, Julian... you're going to lose everything. Your inheritance, your son's future... and me."

She turned her back on him, walking toward the window to watch the rain pour down the glass, completely unaware that outside her door, a tiny red light on an ambient ceiling microphone was quietly recording every single word.
