Chapter 2 - The Shattered Entrance

The heavy oak and iron doors at the edge of the conservatory didn't just open; they slammed inward with a violent force that vibrated through the glass structure above.
Evelyn Vance froze in the doorway. At sixty-two, the matriarch of the Vance legacy possessed a commanding, regal presence that decades of high-society battles had only sharpened. Her silver hair was swept up into an impeccable, elegant chignon, her dark blue tailored wool suit accentuating her posture. In her hands, she carried two brown paper grocery bags filled with fresh apples, warm artisanal bread, and sweet pastries—a small treat meant for her grieving granddaughter.
The scene before her took less than a second to register, but it burned into her retinas like hot iron.
Lily was weeping on the cold tile floor, clutching her tiny elbow, her cream dress soiled. Vanessa was standing above her, smirking, gently pushing her own son on Clara’s swing.
Evelyn’s fingers loosened. The brown paper bags plummeted from her arms, crashing onto the white tile. Fresh red apples tumbled out, rolling across the floor like drops of spilled blood, bruised and scattered among the crushed rose petals.
"You venomous, arrogant parasite," Evelyn breathed. Her voice was not a scream; it was a low, guttural growl that made the glass panels above tremble.
She didn't hesitate. She didn't calculate the social ramifications. Evelyn closed the distance between the doorway and the swing in three terrifyingly swift strides, her high heels clicking like the hammer of a gun cocking.
Vanessa barely had time to turn her head before Evelyn’s right hand whipped through the air.
SLAP!
The sound echoed through the high arches of the glasshouse like a rifle shot. The sheer force of the impact snapped Vanessa’s head sideways, sending her tumbling back against the wrought-iron plant stands. Her manicured hand flew to her left cheek, where a deep, violent crimson print was already rising against her pale skin. Her eyes widened in genuine, breathless horror.
Evelyn didn't even look at her twice. She dropped to her knees directly onto the hard stone floor, unmindful of her tailored trousers, and scooped Lily’s trembling, fragile body into her arms. She pulled the crying child fiercely against her chest, feeling the frantic, rapid pounding of the toddler’s terrified heart.
"I've got you, my darling. Grandmother has you," Evelyn murmured, her stern voice fracturing into deep, protective tenderness as she kissed the top of Lily's head.

Then she stood up, holding the child securely against her hip, her gray eyes burning with an ancient, murderous fury as she locked her gaze onto Vanessa.
"This is my daughter's house!" Evelyn roared, her voice echoing into every corner of the estate. "It always has been, and it always will be! Start packing your bags and get out before I have you thrown into a cell!"
