Chapter 8 - The Shadow on the Balcony

"That... that's a fake!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking into a desperate, high-pitched scream. "That recording was fabricated! It’s an AI generation! You’re framing me!"

"It’s an encrypted, tamper-proof security recording from an estate microphone, Mrs. Sterling," Detective Miller stated flatly, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his coat pocket. "And that's not all."

Miller gestured to his partner, who pulled a manila folder from his leather briefcase.

"Our financial crimes unit tracked the offshore account you transferred fifty thousand dollars to prior to Clara Vance’s death," Miller continued, reading from the document. "The account belongs to a man named Arthur Pendelton—a former structural maintenance worker who was hired by you privately to inspect the estate's balcony railings two weeks before the fall."

Julian Sr. turned to his wife, his mouth hanging open in sheer, unadulterated horror. "Vanessa... what did you do?"

"He sabotaged the steel support pins on the west section of the balcony railing," Miller said coldly, looking directly at Vanessa. "Mr. Pendelton was arrested at his home two hours ago. He has already signed a full confession stating that you paid him to weaken the structure so that a light push during a storm would cause the entire railing to collapse."

The conservatory went deathly silent.

The only sound was the soft, innocent clicking of little Lily playing with her wooden blocks on the blanket nearby, completely oblivious to the monstrous truth unraveling around her.

Vanessa took two frantic steps backward, her eyes darting toward the greenhouse exit like a cornered animal. "No... no! It was Julian! Julian wanted her gone! He wanted the money!"

"You lying bitch!" Julian Sr. roared, lunging toward his wife.

Marcus stepped in instantly, grabbing Julian by his arms and pinning him securely against a wrought-iron plant stand.

"Both of you are under arrest," Detective Miller declared firmly, stepping forward and snapping the steel handcuffs around Vanessa’s wrists. "Vanessa Vance, you are charged with Premeditated First-Degree Murder and Attempted Child Abuse. Julian Vance, you are charged with Conspiracy to Commit Murder and Obstruction of Justice."
