Chapter 3 - The Coward's Reckoning

"Mom! Stop!"
A frantic, high-pitched male voice cut through the heavy tension of the conservatory. Julian’s father—and Evelyn’s only surviving son—Julian Sr., came sprinting through the archway. He wore a deep maroon silk shirt and dark trousers, his face pale, his eyes wide with a pathetic blend of panic and indecision.
Julian Sr. had spent his entire life shrinking beneath the shadows of powerful women—first his formidable mother, then his brilliant, late sister Clara, and now his manipulative, gold-digging second wife, Vanessa.
He rushed toward the two women, reaching out his hands as if to place himself between Evelyn’s wrath and Vanessa’s whimpering form. "Mom, please! You don't understand! Vanessa was just—"
SLAP!
Before he could finish his sentence, Evelyn’s left hand struck across his face with ruthless, military precision. The blow sent him reeling backward, his hand instantly clutching his stinging jaw as he stared at his mother in absolute, unadulterated shock.
"Shut your pathetic mouth!" Evelyn commanded, stepping forward, the trembling child held firmly on her hip. Her eyes bore into her son’s soul with pure disgust. "You stand by and let this blood-sucking viper abuse Clara’s child in Clara’s own sanctuary? In the house my daughter built with her own sweat and genius?"
"Mom... she's my wife now!" Julian Sr. stammered, his voice cracking like a terrified child's. "Clara is gone! We have to move on! Julian needs a family!"
"Your wife is a trespasser, and you are a coward!" Evelyn spat, taking another step that forced both Julian and Vanessa to retreat toward the conservatory doors. "You think because Clara’s body is barely cold in the earth that you can carve up her estate and hand it to this parasite? This house belongs to Lily. Every brick, every plant, every dollar of the Vance trust is legally tied to Clara’s daughter!"
Vanessa scrambled to her feet, hiding behind Julian Sr.’s shoulder, her crimson dress twisted, her face contorted in a mixture of rage and terror. "You can't throw us out! Julian is a Vance! He has rights!"
"Julian has the rights I choose to give him, and right now, he has none!" Evelyn declared coldly. She reached into her dark blue jacket, pulled out a gold-plated smartphone, and pressed a single speed-dial button.
"Marcus," Evelyn said into the receiver, her tone terrifyingly calm. "Bring the security team to the main estate immediately. Have two officers stand guard at the conservatory doors, and call my legal team. The eviction process begins today."

She hung up, looking at her cowering son and his trembling wife one last time.
"And you," Evelyn whispered, her gray eyes freezing over into absolute ice as she glared at Julian Sr. "Get control of your wife... or I will destroy what little is left of your life myself."
