Chapter 10 - The Digital Cipher

The culvert was narrow, freezing, and filled with six inches of rushing rainwater. Claire crawled on her hands and knees through the pitch-black pipe, her lungs burning, her skin scraped raw against the rough concrete walls.

After fifty agonizing yards, the tunnel opened up into a steep, muddy ravine outside the estate's iron fence. She tumbled out into the wet brush, rolling down the slope until she slammed into the base of a thick oak tree.

She lay there for a moment, gasping for air, rain washing the mud from her face.

She was out. But she wasn't safe.

She pulled herself up using the tree trunk, checking her pocket. The USB flash drive was still there, sealed inside its protective plastic sleeve.

She scrambled up the far side of the ravine, reaching a dark two-lane country road that bordered the Greenwich woods. A quarter-mile down the road, parked beneath the dripping canopy of an overgrown willow tree, stood an old, battered blue pickup truck.

Claire froze. A figure stepped out of the driver's side, holding a large black umbrella.

It was not a guard.

As the figure approached, the streetlamp revealed the face of a woman in her late fifties, wearing a dark trench coat. Her features were severe, but her eyes held a look of profound, desperate relief.

It was Evelyn’s former personal secretary—Margaret Chen.

"Claire!" Margaret called out in a harsh whisper, hurrying forward and wrapping a dry wool blanket around Claire's shivering shoulders. "Thank God. When the security alarms went off at the manor, I knew you were trying to make a break."

"Margaret?" Claire gasped, her teeth chattering violently. "How... how did you know?"

"Evelyn left instructions seven years ago," Margaret said, guiding her quickly toward the passenger side of the truck. "She told me that if Julian ever brought you back to the estate, I was to monitor the local security frequencies every night. Get in! His men will be searching these roads in five minutes!"

Claire collapsed into the warm passenger seat of the truck. Margaret slammed the door, jumped into the driver's seat, and hit the gas, the old engine roaring to life as they sped away into the stormy night.

"Where are we going?" Claire asked, clutching the wool blanket around herself.

"To a secure location downtown," Margaret said, keeping her eyes fixed on the rain-slicked road. "We have a private network waiting. Did you find it?"

May you like

Claire reached into her pocket and held up the small black USB drive.

Margaret let out a long, shaky breath. "That drive contains the original cryptographic keys to the Vance-Sterling offshore accounts. With that, we don't just prove Julian murdered Evelyn... we bankrupt his entire syndicate before the sun comes up."
