Chapter 15 - The Unbroken Horizon

Six months later. Autumn 2026.

The morning sun rose over the quiet coastal cliffs of Montauk, Long Island, painting the sky in brilliant strokes of gold, violet, and deep crimson.

Claire Vance stood on the wooden deck of a modest, sunlit cottage overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. She wore a simple white linen dress, her blonde hair caught in the soft sea breeze. In her hand, she held a warm cup of coffee, watching the waves crash rhythmically against the grey rocks below.

Behind her, the glass door slid open, and Margaret Chen walked out onto the deck, holding a tablet displaying the morning financial news.

"The federal court finalized the asset liquidation this morning, Claire," Margaret said with a warm, gentle smile. "Sterling Global Logistics has been officially dissolved. All real estate holdings, shipping lines, and accounts have been transferred into the Vance Heritage Foundation."

Claire turned, smiling softly. "And the asylum?"

"St. Jude’s has been permanently closed," Margaret reported. "Dr. Harrison was sentenced to thirty years without parole yesterday afternoon. Julian’s legal team tried to file another appeal, but the judge threw it out in five minutes."

Claire turned her gaze back out toward the endless blue ocean horizon.

She felt no lingering bitterness, no dark shadows tugging at her thoughts. The scars on her hands from the rough cleaning chemicals had faded, replaced by the soft skin of a woman who had finally reclaimed her peace.

She had liquidated the massive, gloomy Sterling Manor in Greenwich, donating the land to a state park trust. She had kept only this small coastal cottage in Montauk—a place where the air was clean, the sun was warm, and no crystal chandeliers cast deceptive shadows.

"What will you do now, Claire?" Margaret asked softly, leaning against the deck railing beside her.

Claire took a slow, deep breath, feeling the cool, salt-laced air fill her lungs—air that tasted of absolute, unshakeable freedom.

She set her coffee cup down on the wooden table, looked into the golden morning light, and smiled.

"I’m going to live, Margaret," Claire whispered softly. "For the first time in my life... I’m just going to live."

And as the golden sun climbed higher into the clear blue sky, the shadows of the past dissolved completely into the light of a new, unbroken day.
