Chapter 8 - The Shadow on the Marble

"Put the book down, Claire," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he stepped into the library. The barrel of the gun remained pointed at the polished floor, but his stance was balanced, ready to raise it in a fraction of a second.

Claire backed against the stone fireplace, her fingers digging into the leather cover of Evelyn's journal behind her back. "You killed her," Claire whispered, her voice shaking with a dangerous mixture of horror and newfound rage. "She was your fiancée. She was my sister!"

Julian stopped ten feet away from her. He looked down at the gun in his hand, then back up at her, a look of profound, chilling weariness in his eyes.

"Evelyn was unstable, Claire," Julian said smoothly, as if discussing a bad financial investment. "She was paranoid. She suffered from the same genetic psychiatric disorder that took your biological mother. She began fabricating stories about deeds, transfers, and murders."

"Don't lie to me!" Claire screamed, her voice echoing off the high, book-lined walls. "It's all in her diary! You forged the documents! You stole my family's legacy and then you hunted me down like an animal!"

Julian sighed softly, taking another slow step forward. "Do you have any idea how complicated the real world is, Claire? Your father was a weak, incompetent man who was plunging Vance Global into bankruptcy. I saved the company. I preserved the assets. And yes, I found you. I brought you out of that miserable orphan system, gave you a life of luxury, and protected you from the vultures who would have stripped you of everything."

"You didn't protect me! You imprisoned me!"

"Because you don't know how to handle power!" Julian’s voice suddenly snapped, dropping its smooth facade, revealing the raw, vicious authority beneath. "You are emotional! You are weak! Just like Evelyn was!"

He raised the gun, pointing the black barrel directly at her chest.

"Give me the journal, Claire," Julian commanded softly. "And the flash drive you shoved into your pocket. Hand them over, and we can pretend this little night walk never happened."

Claire looked at the black barrel of the gun. She saw the absolute, cold detachment in Julian's dark eyes. She knew with absolute certainty that if she handed those items over, she would never leave this house alive. She would suffer an "accidental overdose" or a "fatal relapse" before Friday's press conference, and Julian would inherit her shares through her estate.

She had nothing left to lose.

"No," Claire said flatly.

Julian's eyebrow twitched. "No?"

"If you're going to kill me, Julian, do it now," Claire said, stepping forward, pressing her chest against the icy air between them. "Shoot me in your grandfather's library. Let Mrs. Gable wipe my blood off your Italian marble. But I am never giving you this book."

For three agonizing seconds, Julian stared at her, his finger tightening on the trigger. The silence in the room was so absolute Claire could hear the ticking of her own watch.

Then, a sudden, sharp alarm began to blare throughout the house.

Red emergency lights flashed along the perimeter walls. The deafening screech of the main security system echoed through the halls.

Julian’s head snapped toward the hallway. "What is that?" he muttered, his focus breaking for a fraction of a second.

It was the only window Claire needed.

She hurled Evelyn's heavy leather journal directly at Julian's face. The heavy book struck him square across the nose and eyes, sending him stumbling backward with a curse.

Claire didn't look back. She sprinted toward the rear service exit behind the library's oak desk, her bare feet flying across the hardwood floor.
