Chapter 6 - A Dinner of Poison and Pearls

The formal dining room was vast, cold, and lit by a single iron chandelier that cast long, spider-like shadows across the dark oak walls. A long mahogany table stretched thirty feet across the room, set with fine silver cutlery, crystal goblets, and porcelain plates.

Julian sat at the head of the table, sipping a glass of deep red Cabernet. When Claire entered, he stood up politely, pulling out the chair directly to his right—a breach of formal etiquette that placed her uncomfortably close to him.

"You look beautiful, my dear," Julian said, his eyes scanning her. She had refused to change out of her waiter's trousers and collared shirt, though she had removed the vest and black bow tie.

Claire sat down quietly, avoiding his eyes. Mrs. Gable stepped out from the butler's pantry, placing a silver bowl of clear consommé in front of Claire, followed by a glass of red wine poured from a decanter.

Julian watched her closely as he resumed his seat. "Drink your wine, Claire. It's a 2012 vintage from our private vineyard. You used to love it."

Claire looked at the dark liquid in her glass. The smell of alcohol was sharp, almost medicinal. Paranoia, cold and sharp, coiled in her gut.

"I'm not thirsty, Julian," she said softly.

Julian set his glass down with a heavy clack against the wood. "Are you afraid I'm poisoning you, Claire? Really? After everything I've done to keep you alive?"

"You kept me in a cage," she said, looking up to meet his dark gaze. "You watched me starve in Queens for three months just to prove a point. Why should I trust anything in this house?"

Julian leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table, his fingers laced together. "You think I enjoyed watching you suffer? Every night you slept in that freezing apartment, my men were parked outside to ensure no one harmed you. Do you know who lives in that neighborhood, Claire? Do you have any idea how many predators roam those streets?"

"The only predator I'm afraid of is sitting three feet away from me," Claire replied coldly.

Julian's eyes flashed with a dangerous, dark light, but he controlled himself, taking a slow breath. "You are bitter. That is understandable. But tomorrow, things return to normal. The press has already been informed that your 'disappearance' was due to a severe mental breakdown following a car accident. We are hosting a press conference here at the estate on Friday to announce your recovery."

Claire felt her blood run cold. "A mental breakdown? You're telling the world I'm crazy?"

"It explains everything," Julian said smoothly, taking a bite of his meal. "It explains why you vanished, why you were found working as a maid, and why you might say... unstable things to the media. If you cooperate, the narrative stays gentle. If you resist, I will have you committed to St. Jude’s Private Asylum by Saturday morning."

Claire stared at him, the full scope of his trap revealing itself. By framing her as mentally ill, he neutralized her completely. Anything she said about Evelyn, about his crimes, or about her captivity would be dismissed as the delusions of a sick woman.

"Now," Julian said, gesturing toward her glass. "Drink your wine."

Claire looked at the glass, then at Julian's expectant face. Slowly, her fingers closed around the stem. She raised the glass to her lips, letting the liquid touch her tongue—and then, with a swift, deliberate flick of her wrist, she tilted the glass sideways.

The dark wine spilled across the pristine white tablecloth, spreading like a pool of fresh blood directly toward Julian's plate.

May you like

Mrs. Gable gasped from the corner of the room. Julian didn't flinch as the red liquid reached the edge of his plate. He simply stared at Claire with a terrifying, emotionless intensity.

"I spilled it," Claire said softly, her voice steady. "I told you I was clumsy tonight."
