Chapter 13 - The Unraveling

Every camera in the room whipped around toward the grand entrance of the ballroom.

Standing beneath the archway, framed by the bright morning light pouring through the glass doors, was Claire Vance.

She was not wearing a stained maid uniform, nor did she look like a fragile, broken patient. She wore a sharp, tailored black suit, her blonde hair styled cleanly, her posture rigid, powerful, and majestic. In her hand, she held a small remote control module.

Beside her stood two senior investigators from the New York State Attorney General’s office, along with four armed federal marshals.

The ballroom exploded into absolute bedlam. Camera flashes went off like a machine gun, reporters shouted questions, and security guards took a step forward before freezing at the sight of the federal badges displayed by the marshals.

Julian’s hands gripped the edges of the podium so hard the wood groaned. The color drained from his face, leaving the bandage on his nose standing out starkly against his pale skin.

"Claire..." Julian stammered into the microphone, fighting desperately to maintain his composure. "Darling... please... you're confused. Guards, assist my wife—"

"I am not confused, Julian," Claire said, her voice amplified through the ballroom speakers as she pointed her remote module at the massive LED screen behind Julian's stage.

She pressed a button.

The Sterling Global corporate logo on the screen dissolved, replaced instantly by high-resolution scans of the documents from the encrypted drive.

The four-million-dollar payment to Dr. Harrison. The medical records detailing the administration of neurotoxins to Evelyn Vance. The forged stock transfers. And finally, the complete wiretap audio file recorded the night Evelyn died.

A technician from the AG’s office hit play on a laptop connected to the room's master audio board.

Julian’s own voice echoed out through the ballroom speakers, crisp, clear, and damning:

“Make sure the dosage looks like a natural cardiac arrest, Richard. Once Evelyn is out of the picture, her sister Claire inherits her shares automatically. She’s twenty-three and completely clueless. I’ll marry her within six months and the Vance estate is ours permanently.”

The ballroom dropped into a horrified, breathless silence.

Reporters stared at the screen, then at Julian, their mouths agape.

Julian backed away from the podium, his eyes wild, his chest heaving as he looked at the massive screen displaying his own death warrant. The smooth, invincible billionaire had vanished, replaced by a cornered, terrified animal.

"That... that is a fabrication!" Julian screamed, his voice cracking into a pathetic, high-pitched screech. "She’s insane! She forged those files! Arrest her!"

Claire walked slowly down the center aisle between the rows of reporters, her leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the marble floor. She stopped ten feet from the stage, looking up at him with clear sky-blue eyes that held no fear, no doubt, and no mercy.

"The game is over, Julian," Claire said softly, her voice carrying across the quiet room. "You didn't marry a victim. You married Arthur Vance's daughter. And I've come to take my family's home back."
