Chapter 2 - The Velvet Chains

The silence that followed Julian’s declaration was deafening. The surrounding elite stared in stunned disbelief as the titan of Wall Street stood holding the wrist of a catering maid whose face was wet with tears.
"Julian... you're insane," the blonde woman—Victoria Vance, daughter of the real estate mogul hosting the gala—stammered, backing away. "She's wearing a name tag that says 'Sarah'! She's staff! You're making a spectacle of us!"
"Leave us, Victoria," Julian said flatly, without looking at her. His thumb brushed over the pulse point on Claire's wrist, feeling the frantic, hummingbird flutter of her blood. "Go back to your father. Tell him the merger talks are suspended."
Victoria gasped, her cheeks turning a mottled red. She glared at Claire with pure, unadulterated hatred before turning on her high heels and storming off into the crowd, her crimson dress swishing furiously.
Julian turned his full attention back to Claire. His eyes swept over her faded uniform, the dark circles under her eyes, and the thinness of her collarbones. A flicker of genuine pain crossed his featureless mask. "Look at what you've done to yourself," he murmured, his voice laced with a terrifying blend of tenderness and obsession. "Living like an animal. Hiding in filth."
"Let me go, Julian," Claire whispered, her voice trembling. "Please. Just let me walk out that door. I won't come back. I won't say a word to anyone."
"Walk away?" Julian let out a low, humorless laugh that sent a shiver through her spine. "I spent ninety-two days searching every morgue, every hospital, every skid row shelter in this city for your body. I thought you burned in that cottage, Claire. I mourned you. And you were here... serving champagne to people who wipe their feet on you."
He didn't wait for her response. With a gentle yet unyielding pressure, he steered her toward the private VIP corridor near the rear of the ballroom. Claire considered screaming, dropping the silver tray, or throwing herself to the floor, but two heavy-set men in sharp grey suits—Julian's personal security detail—instantly stepped out of the shadows, blocking any view from the crowd and sealing off the exit.
They entered a soundproofed private office. Julian closed the heavy mahogany door behind them, locking it with a quiet, metallic click.
The noise of the ballroom evaporated. The air in the office was cold, smelling of leather and polish. Julian walked over to the silver tray still held in Claire's frozen hands, lifted the remaining champagne glasses one by one, and set them calmly on a side table. Then, he took the silver tray from her, tossed it aside, and took her cold hands into his broad, warm palms.
"Why, Claire?" he asked, his dark eyes searching hers desperately. "Why did you fake your death?"
Claire looked down at his polished shoes, her mind racing. She couldn't tell him the truth. She couldn't tell him that she had found the hidden safe behind the painting in his study. She couldn't tell him that she knew about the accident six years ago, or the woman named Evelyn whose name had been erased from every police ledger in the state. If he knew she possessed the key to his destruction, she would never leave this room alive.
"I couldn't live in that house anymore, Julian," she lied smoothly, letting her voice crack with performative weakness. "The pressure... the constant scrutiny... your control over every second of my life. I was drowning. I wanted to be free."
Julian stared at her for a long, agonizing moment. His grip on her hands tightened slightly. "Free?" he whispered. "You think freedom is working twelve-hour shifts for minimum wage? You belong to me, Claire. We swore vows before God and the state. You don't get to divorce me by lighting a match and changing your name."

He raised one hand, his fingers gently tracing her jawline, brushing away a stray tear. The gesture was tender, but to Claire, it felt like a snake coiling around her throat.
"You're coming home tonight," Julian whispered against her ear. "And this time, the doors will stay locked."
