Chapter 12 - The Stage is Set

By 9:00 AM, the rain had stopped, leaving the grounds of Sterling Manor shrouded in a thick, eerie morning fog.

Satellite broadcast vans lined the cobblestone driveway. Dozens of news reporters, camera crews, and high-society journalists gathered in the grand ballroom—the very room where three nights ago, Julian had declared a catering maid to be his wife.

In the center of the room, a raised stage had been erected, flanked by microphoned podiums and massive Sterling Global Logistics banners.

Inside his private study on the second floor, Julian Sterling stood before a floor-to-ceiling mirror, adjusting his silk tie. His face was pale, dark circles beneath his eyes, and a small bandage covered the bridge of his nose where Evelyn's journal had struck him.

Mrs. Gable stepped into the study, her face tight with anxiety. "Sir... the press has arrived. Over eighty outlets are checked in. But security hasn't found her yet. They tracked her to a ravine on the east boundary, but the trail went cold."

Julian’s eyes flared with a brief, terrifying spark of fury, but he checked his composure, turning to face his housekeeper.

"It doesn't matter," Julian said smoothly. "If she isn't here, we pivot. I will read a prepared statement announcing that my wife's condition deteriorated overnight and she has been voluntarily admitted to St. Jude’s under Dr. Harrison’s care. Once the public accepts the narrative, any story she tries to tell later will look like the babblings of a lunatic."

"Understood, sir," Mrs. Gable bowed.

Julian picked up his suit jacket, slipped it on, and checked his reflection one last time. He looked immaculate, powerful, and utterly in control.

He walked out of his study, descended the grand marble staircase, and entered the ballroom to a chorus of camera flashes and low hums from the media.

He stepped up to the podium, placing his hands on the wooden edges, looking out over the crowd of reporters with a somber, practiced expression of grief and concern.

"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen," Julian began, his voice echoing clearly through the room's sound system. "I want to thank you all for coming on such short notice. As many of you know, the past few days have brought intense speculation regarding my family, my corporate holdings, and most importantly, my beloved wife, Claire."

He paused, lowering his eyes for performative effect.

"It breaks my heart to inform you today," Julian continued, "that despite our greatest hopes, Claire’s tragic psychological struggle following her traumatic accident has reached a critical stage. Acting on the expert advice of Dr. Richard Harrison..."

"Dr. Harrison is currently under arrest by federal marshals, Julian."

The voice cut through the ballroom like a lightning bolt.
