Chapter 12 - The Phoenix Protocol

By midnight, the Sterling ancestral mansion was silent, surrounded by yellow police tape floating in the cool night breeze.
Evelyn Sterling sat in an interrogation room at the State Police Barracks, her hands handcuffed to the steel table. But she wasn't weeping. She wasn't pleading. She sat in the harsh fluorescent light, taking slow, deliberate sips from a paper cup of water, her face as smooth and unreadable as marble.
Across from her sat Detective Marcus.
"The vault burned, Evelyn," Marcus said, slamming a stack of preliminary arson reports onto the table. "We lost the local server. But federal cyber-crime units are already tracing the IP origin of the Worcester motel transmission."
Evelyn set her paper cup down with quiet precision. "You won't find her, Detective."
"Your accomplice?" Marcus sneered. "Your daughter-in-law? The woman you claimed was trying to poison you?"
Evelyn smiled—a soft, almost maternal expression that sent a shiver down Marcus’s spine.
"Sarah is not my accomplice, Detective," Evelyn said smoothly. "She is my proudest creation."
Marcus frowned, leaning forward. "What are you talking about?"
"David was always weak," Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a cold, reflective tone. "He inherited his father's romantic, pathetic idealism. He thought wealth was something you enjoyed, not something you defended with blood. When he brought Sarah home five years ago, I didn't see an enemy. I saw a girl from the gutters who possessed the raw, vicious ambition this family severely lacked."
"You trained her," Marcus realized, his eyes widening in horror.
"I educated her," Evelyn corrected gently. "We spent three years building the Phoenix Protocol. A complete erasure of the Sterling name. A liquidation of every asset, every property, every bond, converted into untraceable digital capital. The public drama at the house today... the cupcake threat, the screaming, the police call... it was the final trigger to legally freeze the estate and trigger the automatic insurance payouts."

"And David?" Marcus asked, disgusted. "Your own son? You left him with nothing. You left him framed as a domestic abuser and an unstable father."
"David will survive," Evelyn said dismissively. "Or he won't. It doesn't matter. The bloodline continues through Chloe. And Sarah will raise Chloe in an environment where she will never be weak."
