Chapter 4 - The Unraveling Archive

David’s hands shook as he pulled the zipper of the black leather handbag.

Evelyn remained on the floor, slowly pushing herself up to a kneeling position, her cream satin blouse stained with grey dust from the carpet edge. She didn't try to stand. She sat on her heels, watching her son with the twisted satisfaction of a spider watching a fly entangle itself in a web that had already been spun months ago.

Inside the bag, there were no cosmetic compacts, no designer wallets, no routine personal effects.

The interior was lined with reinforced Kevlar fabric, housing a thick manila folder sealed with red tamper-evident tape, a compact digital recording device, and a small silver cylinder fitted with a rubber plunger.

David pulled out the manila folder first. The red tape was stamped with the seal of the Massachusetts State Police Evidence Division.

"What is this?" David demanded, his eyes scanning the label. "Why do you have police evidence in your personal bag, mother?"

"Read the dates, David," Evelyn said, her voice regaining its smooth, hypnotic cadence. "Your wife didn't vanish three days ago because she was kidnapped. She ran because the State Attorney was forty-eight hours away from unsealing an indictment against her."

David’s heart hammered violently against his ribs. He tore the red tape open, pulling out a stack of high-resolution surveillance photographs and financial ledgers.

The photographs showed Sarah—his quiet, gentle wife, the mother of his child—standing in the rain outside a shipping terminal in South Boston, handing a dark duffel bag to a man whose face was circled in red marker. Below the photo was an FBI intelligence file identifying the man as Arthur Vance, a high-ranking lieutenant in a federal money-laundering syndicate.

"This is fake," David breathed, his knuckles turning blue as he gripped the pages. "You staged this. You used your connections in the department to forge these documents!"

"Check the digital drive, David," Evelyn sneered softly, pointing a thin, trembling finger at the silver recorder in the bag. "Listen to her voice. Listen to her sell your daughter’s trust fund to pay off her brother's gambling debts."

Chloe, still sitting near the bed, whimpered softly. David looked down at his daughter, then back at the silver device. The room seemed to shrink, the walls closing in as the foundation of his reality crumbled around him.

He pressed the play button on the recorder.
