Chapter 2 - The Violent Collision

The threshold of the room ruptured as David Sterling charged inside.
At thirty-four, David possessed the broad-shouldered, muscular frame of a former collegiate athlete, dressed casually in an ash-gray t-shirt and charcoal shorts. He wore heavy brown leather boots that left faint impressions on the pristine white carpet as he crossed the room in two terrifying strides.
He didn't hesitate. He didn't ask questions. The sight of his mother hovering over his helpless, silent daughter triggered a raw, animalistic reaction that bypassed thirty years of psychological conditioning.
"What! What are you doing to my daughter?" David roared.
Before Evelyn could react or pull the bag into her coat, David’s large, calloused hand clamped around her shoulder. With a surge of fury, he shoved the older woman backward.
Evelyn let out a sharp gasp as her balance broke. Her silk ribbon whipped through the air as she crashed heavily into the high-backed leather armchair behind her. The chair groaned under the sudden impact, sliding back several inches against the hardwood floor. Her pristine bun loosened slightly, a single strand of blonde hair falling across her forehead like a crack in a porcelain doll.
"David! Have you lost your mind?" Evelyn hissed, her voice trembling not with fear, but with aristocratic outrage. She smoothed her cream satin blouse with quick, nervous strokes of her hands, attempting to regain her dominant posture. "You dare lay hands on your mother?"
"I asked you a question!" David’s voice echoed off the vaulted ceilings. His chest heaved, his arms hanging heavy at his sides, knuckles white.
On the floor, Chloe scrambled backward on her knees, her small hands reaching out toward David’s brown boots. The terrifying spell Evelyn had cast over her broke the moment her father’s shadow fell over her. Tears spilled down the child's flushed cheeks, but instead of whimpering, she pointed a trembling, tiny finger straight at the armchair.
More specifically, straight at the black leather handbag resting on the cushion behind Evelyn’s hip.
"That brat's lying!" Evelyn spat quickly, her eyes darting between David and the child, her voice rising into an uncharacteristic, shrill pitch. "She slipped on the rug! I was bending down to pick her up! You believe her or me?"
May you like
Chloe tugged wildly at the hem of David’s shorts, her small voice rising in a sharp, clear plea that stunned both adults in the room.
"Daddy, don't let her get that bag!"
