Chapter 3 - The Black Leather Bag

The silence that followed the child's warning was suffocating.

David looked down at his daughter. Chloe had never spoken a sentence that coherent before. The urgency in her eyes was not that of a toddler throwing a tantrum; it was the sheer, instinctual panic of a witness pointing out a weapon.

David shifted his gaze slowly from Chloe to his mother.

Evelyn was already moving. Her right arm snaked backward, her fingers clawing frantically for the strap of the black leather bag. Her composure was completely shattered now, her face contorting into a mask of desperate, feral determination.

"Give me that," David commanded, stepping forward.

"Touch this bag and you destroy this family, David!" Evelyn shrieked, hauling the heavy leather purse into her lap and clutching it against her chest like a shield. "Everything I built! Everything I protected for you! You think your wife left you because she fell out of love? You don't know what Sarah was planning!"

David didn't listen. He leaned over the chair, his low-angle stance looming over Evelyn like an executioner. He seized the leather handles of the bag.

"Let go!" Evelyn screamed, digging her manicured nails into the leather, her gold rings scratching the fine grain.

David yanked hard. The force was overwhelming. Evelyn was pulled forward out of the armchair, her grip failing as she lost her footing on the slick white rug. She tumbled hard onto the carpet, landing on her side in a heap of crumpled cream satin and disheveled blonde hair.

David backed away, holding the heavy black bag in his right hand. His breath came in heavy, jagged rasps as he looked down at the woman on the floor.

"Get out of my house!" David snarled, his voice dropping into a register of terrifying, absolute finality. "Get out before I kill you myself!"

Evelyn lay on the floor for a long moment, gasping for air, her royal demeanor reduced to ruin. She slowly lifted her head, looking up at her son from the ground. Her slate-gray eyes were no longer panicked; they were cold, calculated, and filled with a dark, toxic promises.

"You think taking that bag saves you?" Evelyn whispered, spitting a strand of hair from her lips. "Open it, David. Open it and see what your precious Sarah was carrying before I stopped her."
