Chapter 6 - The AI Mirage

David froze. The breath caught in his throat like a lump of glass.

He looked down at his daughter, whose eyes were fixed intently on the silver recording device.

"What did you say, Chloe?" David asked, his voice barely a whisper.

"Grandma press button," Chloe repeated, her small voice steady and clear. "Grandma talk funny. Talk like Mommy into the silver box yesterday in the library."

Evelyn’s face transformed instantly. The fragile, victimized matriarch vanished, replaced by a sudden, terrifying rigidity.

"The child is confused!" Evelyn snapped, her voice turning sharp as a whip. "She’s fourteen months old, David! She doesn't understand what she's saying!"

"Fourteen-month-olds don't lie about specific events, mother," David said, a terrifying clarity beginning to pierce through the fog of his grief.

David raised the silver recording device and flipped it over. On the back casing, near the battery compartment, was a tiny blue LED light flashing at regular intervals—the indicator for a high-end vocal synthesizer chip, the kind used in military-grade psychological operations and advanced audio deepfaking.

David pressed the menu toggle on the side of the device.

The screen lit up, displaying a file list:

File_01: Sarah_Vocal_Profile_Base.wav

File_02: Synthesized_Dialogue_TrustFund.wav

File_03: Output_Mix_Ricin_Threat.wav

The audio had been artificially constructed. Every word, every inflection of Sarah's voice had been harvested from old phone calls and home videos, processed through an algorithm to manufacture a fake confession.

David lifted his head. His eyes locked onto Evelyn with a lethal, terrifying rage that made the older woman take an involuntary step backward.

"You manufactured this," David said, his voice dropping an octave, vibrating with an intensity that rattled the glass in the window frames. "You staged the surveillance photos. You faked the audio. You didn't come up here to find poison, Evelyn... you came up here to plant it."

"David, listen to me—" Evelyn began, her voice finally displaying a tremor of genuine fear.

"Where is my wife?" David roared, dropping the bag and taking a violent step toward his mother. "Where is Sarah?!"

Before Evelyn could answer, the sound of heavy tires crunching on the gravel driveway outside echoed through the open window, followed by the sudden, red-and-blue strobe lights of three police cruisers illuminating the bedroom ceiling.
