Chapter 7 - The Encircled House

The flashing lights painted the bedroom in alternating shades of crimson and cobalt, transforming the serene white space into a surreal, chaotic crime scene.

Downstairs, heavy boots pounded against the hardwood steps of the grand foyer.

"State Police! Clear the floor!" a commanding voice shouted from the stairwell.

Evelyn’s terrifying composure returned in an instant, like a mask snapping back into place over a skull. She pulled her silk ribbon tight around her neck, smoothed her cream blouse, and adjusted her disheveled blonde bun with two swift, practiced movements of her hands.

"You have ten seconds to decide how this story ends, David," Evelyn whispered, her voice dropping into a low, vicious murmur as the footfalls grew louder in the hallway. "If you tell them I forged those files, I will execute the financial fail-safe I installed in the Sterling Trust. By noon, every asset you own will be seized by the federal government for grand tax fraud."

"You're insane," David said, backing toward Chloe and pulling the child up into his heavy arms. "You'd ruin your own son?"

"I would rather see you bankrupt and in prison than watch you hand my family's legacy over to a girl from the slums of South Boston," Evelyn said coldly.

The bedroom door swung open fully.

Three uniformed state troopers, flanked by a lead detective in a dark trench coat, stepped into the room, their hands resting cautiously near their holstered sidearms.

Detective Marcus Vance—a tall man with graying temples and sharp, dark eyes—scanned the scene instantly: the overturned armchair, the black leather bag dumped on the floor with evidence files spilling out, the terrified muscular man holding his toddler, and the elegant older woman standing with flawless posture near the window.

"David Sterling?" Detective Marcus asked, pulling his badge from his belt. "We received an emergency 911 dispatch from this address reporting an active abduction and domestic threat."

"Thank God you're here, Detective," Evelyn spoke up immediately, her voice breaking into a perfectly executed, tearful wobble as she stepped toward the officers. "My son... he's been having a psychological breakdown since his wife abandoned the family three days ago. He just attacked me. He tried to destroy the evidence Sarah left behind!"

Detective Marcus looked at Evelyn, then shifted his gaze to the black bag on the floor, and finally to David.

"Is that true, Mr. Sterling?" Marcus asked calmly.

David held Chloe tightly against his chest. He felt the child’s small heart beating rapidly against his ribs. He looked at his mother, whose eyes held a silent, lethal warning, and then at the detective.

"No, Detective," David said, his voice steady as iron. "My mother didn't call you to report a crime. She called you to secure an alibi... because my wife's body is somewhere on this property."
