Chapter 14 - The Intersection at Dead Creek

Sarah slammed her foot on the accelerator. The black SUV surged forward, its twin-turbo engine roaring as it tore through the thick fog at ninety miles per hour.

Behind her, the rusted station wagon matched her speed, its engine screaming in protest as David pushed the old vehicle beyond its mechanical limits.

Three miles ahead lay the Dead Creek Bridge—a narrow, two-lane wooden structure spanning a deep, rocky gorge that marked the boundary between states.

Sarah checked her side mirror. David was pulling up beside her, his heavy station wagon swerving dangerously close to her passenger door.

Through the rain-slicked glass of his driver's window, Sarah saw her husband's face.

There was no grief left in David’s eyes. No confusion. No pain. There was only a cold, primordial fury—the look of a man who had been stripped of his home, his marriage, and his life, and had nothing left to lose.

And in the backseat of the station wagon, securely strapped into her safety seat, was Chloe.

Sarah’s breath hitched. "He brought the child..."

David didn't try to force her off the road. He swerved hard to the left, using the heavy steel frame of his station wagon to block the entrance to the Dead Creek Bridge.

CRASH.

The two vehicles collided at sixty miles per hour, metal screeching against metal, glass shattering into thousands of glittering diamonds across the asphalt.

The black SUV spun out of control, its tires smoking, crashing heavily into the concrete guardrail at the edge of the bridge. The station wagon slammed into the wooden support beams, coming to a dead stop across both lanes, completely blocking the path forward.

Silence fell over the highway, broken only by the hiss of steam rising from the ruptured radiators and the distant howl of the wind through the gorge below.

Sarah kicked her damaged driver's door open, stumbling out onto the wet asphalt. Blood trickled down her forehead from a small cut, but her grip on the silenced 9mm pistol was rock-solid.

She raised the weapon, pointing it directly through the shattered windshield of the station wagon.

"Get out of the car, David!" Sarah screamed over the wind. "Get out and leave the girl!"
