Chapter 13 - The Road to Montreal

Forty miles north, a sleek black SUV glided quietly along a deserted stretch of Interstate 93, heading toward the Canadian border.
In the driver's seat sat Sarah Sterling. She had traded her dark jumpsuit for a sharp, tailored coat, her blonde hair pulled back into a neat, low bun—an exact replica of Evelyn’s signature style.
On the passenger seat rested a secure tablet computer displaying a live bank balance:
Swiss Digital Ledger: $74,250,000.00 USD - Status: Cleared.
The operation was complete. In less than twelve hours, she would cross the border under a verified diplomatic passport, taking up residence in a private estate in the Laurentian Mountains. Evelyn would serve eight months in a minimum-security facility for evidence tampering before her high-priced legal team cleared her on technicalities, joining Sarah abroad to complete Chloe’s upbringing.
Everything had gone according to the plan.
Except for one detail.
Sarah looked at the rearview mirror.
Ten car lengths behind her, two dim halogen headlights emerged from the thick fog on the highway, maintaining a constant, precise distance.
Sarah’s eyes narrowed. She pressed a button on her steering wheel, bringing up her rear-facing thermal camera on the dash display.
The vehicle behind her was not a state police cruiser. It had no sirens, no official markings.
It was an old, rusted silver station wagon—the utility vehicle David used to haul building supplies for his timber business.
Sarah’s lips thinned into a tight, hard line. "David..."
She tapped the screen, activating her encrypted comms link to Evelyn’s legal liaison. "He's behind me. He tracked the station wagon."
A voice replied through her earpiece: "He has no law enforcement support, Sarah. The police believe he is still at the estate. Deal with him."

Sarah reached into her coat pocket, her manicured hand closing around the cool, heavy steel grip of the silenced 9mm pistol.
"With pleasure," she whispered.
